Museum Nias Lodges - Guesthouses
The Nias Heritage Museum offers visitors the unique opportunity to stay in one of our traditional Nias houses located on the museum grounds. The houses are authentic Nias ‘Omo Hada’ style buildings that have been relocated to the museum and refurbished with modern amenities for increased comfort. These buildings are very popular with tourists and event participants at the museum. There are four traditional houses, two modern houses as well as a more basic guesthouse available for overnight guests. The guest lodges are all located in the beautiful museum gardens which also includes access to our private beach. There is a restaurant on the premises as well as free Wi-Fi and around the clock security.
Background
The Nias Heritage Museum had a desire to preserve the traditional houses of Nias and was concerned about the fact that they are slowly reducing in numbers. For this reason the Museum relocated and renovated four different types of traditional houses to the museum grounds. The houses have different styles and are from different regions of Nias; Laraga from North Nias, Bawölato from central Nias and Bawöganöwö & Ulunoyo from South Nias. These buildings were originally part of the Museum exhibitions, as examples of traditional Nias houses.
After some years the cost of maintaining the buildings became very burdensome. The roof has to be replaced every three years and the buildings must constantly be looked after. Eventually the Museum decided to accommodate visitors who wanted enjoy the traditional Nias houses. After the Nias earthquake (2005), the museum houses became very popular with aid workers from all over the world who came to Nias during the rebuilding of Nias. They felt safe during here and enjoyed the greenery of the museum and cool breeze from the sea.
Since opening the traditional houses as guesthouses they have had many visitors from all over the world. Our guest accommodation is suitable for anyone visiting Gunungsitoli or Nias Island. By staying at the Museum Nias Lodges you are supporting the preservation of Nias culture and the work of the Nias Heritage Museum.
